Hi folks hopefully someone can help, there are two issues!
    1) I had a couple of plugins onboard that I thought might be causing this problem – Zemanta and Auto Post Thumbnail, however deactivating them is making no difference. After I “permanently delete” a featured image as soon as I update the post it comes back in to the featured image thing and the item recrated both in the media manager and on the file system.
The featured image is relating to an embedded image in the post: item

    2) Originally I deleted it because the excerpt was just showing the place holder, in any browser, and I gave up as I couldn’t work out why it wasn’t showing, assuming it was another one of those WP things that you need to ignore and work around or live with.

    This was the featured image:
and the featured image which gives a 404.

    But it is there.

It appears then that the fact of it not showing, is nothing to do with WP because I can download it again from that address using Filezilla – so it is definitely there and it is definitely editable or viewable in any graphics program on my local system.
If I look at the source for the page it shows the url exactly as per the url showing in Filezilla.

For posterity the url in Filezilla is ftp://…/public_html/virtualenergy.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/300px-Enrique_Pe%C3%B1a_Nieto_-_World_Economic_Forum_on_Latin_America_2010-150×150.jpg

    File permissions are 644

    My head is spinning!

  • Is it a problem with only one featured image or is it a general problem?
As you can view the image via FTP, have you tried to delete it from the uploads folder?

When you Delete permanently they are deleted from that folder, not just database. I checked earlier. Well I haven’t seen it for a while but I haven’t posted a lot until the last couple of days.

I think it is an old problem as I have seen the behaviour before many times – most times it stayed gone but I wouldn’t mind betting this means I just didn’t update the post again afterwards – I think last time I got around a persistent occurrence by renaming files re uploading etc..

But sometimes it has been difficult to shed an old image and replace it with a new one which seems like a similar or the same problem underlying things. It is not a browser cache issue or anything like that.

The thing is even if it solves the issue from a rogue file perspective it, the fiddling around still takes to much time, it is a disaster for productivity if it happens every batch of new posts. It wouldn’t be so burdensome if there were not other issues to sort out as well, So I really want to know what is the cause, in order to guard against it.

    Thanks for coming back.

This tells that the problem is solved once you delete the image permanently, right?

You would think so but it is not the case. So long as the embedded image remains in the post at a further update the featured image is being recreated!

That says it – So long as the embedded image remains in the post. But you will be deleting it from the post isn’t it? And on updating what is it recreated? Post?
Generally what you do when you don’t want an image is:
-you delete the image – all sizes – from the media library
-you can verify if the image is still present in your uploads folder
-to further ensure that there is no possibility (actually no), you can verify its references in your database and safely remove them.
Also review how post thumbnails (featured images) work in WordPress:

The point was I wanted the image in the post I didnt want a featured Image.

However I have just discovered why….oh silly me.

Some how I ended up with two plugins that ensured automatic thumbnail creation. To try to isolate the problem I had disabled what I thought was the plugin automatically creating thumbnails – and it was still happening.

Of course disabling the plugin stopped the automatic recreation.

I still dont understand why that particular jpg could not be displayed in the browsers however. If I rename the file that problem has gone however. I cant see what is wrong with the filename however so I am none the wiser.

Anyway time to put this one in the bin and move on!
    Thanks Krishna.
