• Hi

I run multiple installations of wordpress on hosting packages. These often include the primary domain which is the root of the hosting account plus a beta installation for testing out new plugins, etc.

I would like to hear any thoughts on the best practice, for installing. Ideally I would like to not have a beta installation become a subfolder of the main installation as this means if I use a plugin such as backup buddy it gives to installations within the one setup.

So my ideal setup would be my root folder for the domain I’m hosting would contain two folders.
    My current setup is

Root Domain being hosted with all website files(www.mywebstie.com)
    >.This then has a sub folder called beta, which is a clone for testing of the main website. This can be accessed at http://www.mywebsite.com/beta

I would like to be able to setup like this.

Root domain associated with hosting account
    >Sub folder containing the website files. The root domain on the hosting account directs to this folder (What I don’t want is it showing as http://www.mywebsite.com/website, it needs to still be showing as http://www.mywebsite.com
    >Second sub folder containing the clone site and being able to set this up as beta.mywebsite.com

Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to set this up within cpanel and also for my domains. It needs to be that the root domain on the hosting account goes directly to the website folder and is not something that shows in the address bar as http://www.mywebsite.com/website

    Thanks

    Daniel

  • Hi Daniel and everyone

I have a website at http://www.wifionboard.co.uk and I want to duplicate this as it is now on a new url then edit the new one to take it from yachts to motorhomes.

I backed up my existing site plus database and uploaded to the new URL but problems – the file permissions are incorrect – I think I may have sorted this as now I see the message that database is not found.

My questions is how to transfer or replicate a wordpress set up on a new url?

I’m not a beginner but not an expert either… any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Jacks, thanks for the question. It’s a bit off topic of my original question but I would recommend looking into a plugin like backup buddy which can help you also migrate to a new URL and is very straight forward to use. I believe there might be some free alternatives that can do a similar job. If you’re doing it by hand you would need to edit the database. I’m sure there are a bunch of tutorials via a google search on how to migrate to a new url for a wordpress site.

    Good luck

    Hi Daniel,

Check this page to have your files in a folder while running the site from the root.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Giving_WordPress_Its_Own_Directory

once you’ve followed that, then just put the beta install in the /beta/ folder from the root and run it normally.

Thanks Dane, That’s exactly what I was looking for.
