• Do you have any idea why Google shows garbage characters for my website? Below is an actual result:

    The number of visitors to my site dropped to a fourth of what’s normal. Partly because the pages are lower in the results, and partly because people seem not to trust webpages with garbage-descriptions.

    I think it is wrong encoding, but have no clue where to fix it. Yesterday I removed a bad plugin: it put around 30 spaces on the first line of all pages, including the xml-sitemap. I hope that is the problem, but I want to be sure before all the pages get described as garbage on Google.

    Any help is appreciated.

    Seems the problem actually is with the Yoast SEO plugin..

    Google webmaster tools said there were illegal C0 and C1 characters in the file. “fixed” by installing another plugin for the xml-sitemap.

    What does the ‘\T’ do here? Shouldn’t that be a normal space?
    $date = mysql2date( “Y-m-d\TH:i:s+00:00”, $url[‘mod’] );

    The \T is the literal T character as per the iso date specs.

    Ok, did not know that. So there was no other solution than to replace the sitemap-plugin?

    Just looked and your google result (via link in your original post) seems fine.

    That is because I stopped using the sitemap-feature of Yoast two weeks ago. Question remains: so there was no other solution than to replace the sitemap-plugin?

    I dont know, I can see no reason for the garbage descriptions in Google. If you look at the page source, the description meta tags generated by WP SEO are fine.

    May be try again ?
