custom ordering of categories

Is there a way to custom sort categories (not alpha)? Category (term) Order doesn’t seem to work and I’m not finding any documentation on that to see if it’s just me doing it wrong. If there’s ability to sort posts by menu order, is there a similar way for categories? If so how?
