How to customize (split) existing homepage?

    Dear all

    I have a website http://www.awadhpsot.com which is showing some errors, so I want to shift to another theme (magazine basic or responsive). But I do not want to publish in the traditional way, where the posts get displayed in serial order on the homepage rather Iwant to customize where different categories of post appear in different sections of the homepage, something like http://www.firstpost.com or http://www.livelaw.in and so on. Precisely I want to split content in the homepage itself.
    So I need the following help

    1. Is it possible to customize the existing homepage in order to display post in separate regions or is a create of separate template necessary?

    2. What are the ways to achieve my above aims?

    Since I am an old beginner at wordpress detailed help would be appreciated.
