"Exclude" "Disable" and "noindex, follow"

    In the Titles & Metas section I can set
    “noindex, follow”
    to post types and taxonomies.

    In the XML sitemaps section I can set
    “exclude…”
    to post ypes and taxonomies.
    I can also set
    “disable author/user sitemap”.

    To me this seems like three very overlapping functions. I don’t know when to use one or the other.

    So I am asking you. Under which circumstances do I want to you either “noindex, follow”, “exclude…” or “disable…”?
