• Hi all,

I’ve had this site online since last Wednesday: The Musicologist.co.uk

I’m with 123-reg, who for all their apparent sins, have been OK so far.

Anyway, on Thursday and Friday I had over 200 hits without any slowdown.

All of a sudden, yesterday at about 1pm GMT, the whole site started running slower, and even now it takes 4-5 seconds to load.

I asked 123-reg, and they said it could be server load. Indeed, I checked and there are 1,000 sites running off my server.

However, it is now 9am GMT and the site remains slow. Surely it isn’t busier now than on Thursday/Friday evening?

    Here’s the steps I’ve taken:

    1) Installed WP-Optimize

    2) Installed P3 Plugin Performance – my plugins use 29% of the loading time for my page, which I can live with. It’s the other 71% that bothers me.

    3) Installed Quick Cache – this does improve internal page loading times, but it’s the initial page which is the problem.

    4) Installed WP Minify – meant to compress the CSS which was taking up the majority of the loading time, but doesn’t seem to have done anything to help.

Any ideas folks? I’m a little stuck.

    Thanks!

Have you tried deactivating plugins to explore whether any could be responsible? If so, try doing that again and then switching to a default WordPress theme (e.g Twenty Twelve) and then checking if the issue persists.

    I’ll give that a go.

I went on 123-reg live support, and they said it loaded fine from their systems in 2.3 seconds.

On my Chrome, it just took at least 6-7 seconds!

    Sorry for double post, but:

Tried deactivating plug-ins AND switching themes.

Neither worked. Loading time still north of 5 seconds.

You’re using chrome, right? Right click on your website where applicable and select ‘Inspect element’. Switch to the “Network” tab and then refresh the page.

You should be seeing that the majority of the loading time comes from loading the HTML file on your homepage (themusicologist.co.uk).

It’s not a hosting issue because the response times are not relative to the loading times: http://snag.gy/xWj8p.jpg .

Can you deactivate all of your plugins and switch to the Twenty Twelve theme so that we can test it?

Done. Thanks for your help – let me know what you come up with!

I’ve got 5-6 people on the site at the moment, but they’ll have to be patient!

Now it looks like your hosting providers might be to blame for some part of the loading. If they are, this may not be in relation to deactivating all the plugins & switching themes, but through coincidence of timing.

What now seems like is taking up loads of loading time is your large images:

I had a feeling that may have something to do with it. So if I revert back to my premium theme and reupload all of the images as ‘true size’ for the site (i.e 1000 x 600 ish), I should see an improvement?

    Many thanks.

Disregarding the images your site took 2-3 seconds for me to load, so something about your theme or plugins is causing the issue.

I did click ‘reset settings’ on my theme dashboard yesterday, and the problems started shortly after.

I perhaps should have mentioned that.

Regardless though, the Twenty Twelve theme took as long to load, so that shouldn’t be the issue.

I’ve got exactly the same issue. I used Pingdom to review the issue and it relates to the Wait Time. I have 10 wordpress websites all running separately on their Professional Shared Hosting and my sites are taking from between 8-18secs to load (totally unsatisfactory). These websites are a maximum of 38 pages with circa 6plugins. They have advised that I upgrade to their VPS service. They were running fine about a month ago, but have got progressively worse!
