• I installed WP-SMTP but now am hung up on configuring the settings.

I keep getting the message “an error has occurred” when I test, but no info is shown on what the error is.

I can’t figure out whether I am using the proper settings, and the reference screen shot doesn’t provide enough info for me to figure out. I’ve referred to the developer’s page for additional info, but the info there is the same as on the plugin site.

Please help with suggestions for how to set up the settings properly for Microsoft Office 365/Outlook.

I don’t know whether any of the info I am inputting is correct.

    Thank you very much!

  • I need to configure alos, have you figured it out ?

    thanks…bradley

I had the exact same issue. The settings within WP-SMTP are correct, however before it will relay, you need to add the IP address of your website as a trusted IP within your Office 365 Exchange console.

This will be found under the Protection section under settings.

Some cpanel setup might block external connections trough smtp. If your email address is hosted elsewhere then it will be seen an external connection and will be blocked. Make sure that you whitelist your host ip address on your email address configuration.

The solution is to update your SMTP plugin. Try WP Mail SMTP: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-mail-smtp/. It has many more options than WP SMTP and also has built in diagnostics.

And just for the record, some web hosts (example: Bluehost) do block outgoing SMTP connections from their servers to servers not within their control but this Office 365 SMTP issue is pretty common and effects all older apps/plugins that use SMTP because their implementation of TLS is either not compatible with Office 365 or they simply do not have TLS as an option. Other than that, the protection tab does not block connections by default so don’t even bother looking there.

    Hope that helps!
