For some unknown reason, if a post/page has been idle for a few minutes during any given period and a user clicks the Update button; the WordPress post/page editor throws up a pseudo-dialogue containing the prompt “Are you sure you want to do this? Please try again.”
Upon clicking the Try Again link; the user is taken back to the previous page – as expected – but with all unsaved changes gone. This has resulted in countless hours of work being deleted. Vanished.
Clicking the Back button is of no use as the page can still not be saved. Is there a way of disabling this dubious WordPress “functionality”? And if not why is it there? It doesn’t help anyone, as it does nothing.

  • This message suggests a serious issue within your site or on the server. What version of WordPress are you using? Can you replicate the problem using the default Twenty Twelve theme with all plugins deactivated?

This error is occurring across multiple site using multiple browsers and multiple themes.

Generally we use the latest version for development: 3.5.2 – and no we don’t use Twenty Twelve its not part of our development process. Which site should I be testing this on? And with which set of plug-ins deactivated?

There is no magic bullet in these situations. This is just the start of basic troubleshooting and is a process of elimination deliberately designed to locate the root cause as quickly as possible by first removing the most obvious and common culprits via a series of (often) temporary steps.

Do you want to locate and, hopefully, fix the problem on your site? If “yes”, then please help us to help you and carry out the changes that we suggest on at least one of your sites.

Sorry about that: had to change browsers. The other won’t allow me to post.
You’ll need to be patient. We are running a fresh install of wordpress onto an isolated host.

Well no errors as of yet. I suspect that we’ll have to keep you updated, stop using any theme but twenty twelve and not use any plug-ins. I can see this effecting our development.

stop using any theme but twenty twelve and not use any plug-ins

This should only be necessary during the troubleshooting period. The point of this to start to identify whether the problem is within a theme, a plugin or related to the server. So this first step gives you a known, base, environment. If the problem re-occurs in this environment, then you’re probably looking at a server-related issue. If the problem doesn’t occur, then it would indicate that the issue is theme or plugin related and you can take it from there in terms of what you test next.

We run our sites on multiple servers – some ours others hosted elsewhere, using multiple themes and any thousand odd number of plug-ins. Isn’t it easier and more cost effective for us just to disable this functionality? Split testing error messages might be fun and all but we have work to get on with.

Disable what functionality? What you have is an error. Something on your sites is not working correctly and may be comprising overall server security. Do you really want to ignore that?

It is not part of WordPress’ default functionality. It’s an indication of an error. Something specific to your sites is creating this problem.

Brilliant! Of course it is.No one else has ever experienced the same problem.
