how to check if the plugin is up to date?

Hi,
I’m developing a wordpress plugin hosted on wordpress.org and I want to insert code to my plugin that will check if it is up do date, if the version is the latest version. It is very important that the plugin will be updated.
Can you please give code example or like to a codex page? I couldn’t find anything exept from the filter “pre_set_site_transient_update_plugins” witch I dont know how to use.(so give me code example please)

WordPress itself checks if the plugin is updated and puts the normal ‘update notice’ – what are you planning to do with the check?

like I said, I want to tell the admins to upgrade the plugin when it is not the latest version.

I mean, to put a message in the dashboard that says something like “upgrade the plugin… its very important”

Admins are already told to upgrade, though. 🙂

thanks, but isn’t there any way to show message not on the plugins list, just on the main dashboard, domain.com/wp-admin/?

WordPress also shows a notification number in the Updates section of the Dashboard.

I’m not sure what you’re asking for. WordPress already displays update notifications in the Dashboard by default. Anything you wanted to add to your plugin would – I assume – require the plugin to phone home. A practice that is forbidden in wordpress.org hosted plugins.

You probably could still hook in, but that would violate one of the WordPress plugin guidelines (not phoning home).

Plugins should not hijack the blog admin. It is fine to include an Upgrade prompt on the plugin admin page, but not throughout the blog. It is acceptable to embed a widget on the dashboard but this should be the same size as others and be dismissable. It’s fine to put an error message at the top of the admin for special cases, but it should be linked to a way to fix the error and it should be infrequent. Any form of “nagging” is absolutely prohibited.
