Some NEW, Customizr Theme Forums users have a tendency to start topics that have already been asked before, WITHOUT reviewing past entries to find out if their questions have already been answered. I bet this occurs frequently throughout most theme forums. The net result is that more pages are created within forums than necessary.

I know that the following advice is already provided above the Add New Topic form: “Before posting a new topic, be sure to search to see if one has been started already” , but I don’t think enough users are paying attention to it.

How about adding a New Search Bar to the top of each Theme Forums page, so that new (and current) users can search only that theme’s forums to find answers to their questions?

It would help if it was one of the first things a user sees, when going to any Theme Forums page. My thoughts are that this might cut back on new users entering duplicate, triplicate, or quadruplicate topics.

  • That’s a great idea Shapeshifter 3, and one I’m sure a lot of Customizr Theme Forum users would agree with, myself included. I’ve seen similar posts relating to searching other theme forums generally. I think it’s a WordPress thing rather than a Customizr thing.

At the moment anyone (NEW or Experienced) coming to ask a question about a theme, has no option to search the forum just for that theme. So their only alternative is to scroll through interminable pages of previous posts in the hope that somewhere, in the title of a post, they might find the answer. But that can literally eat up an hour or more easily. Hence it’s much easier to ask your own question.

Like you I think it’s a real flaw in the WordPress.org forum structure, that could be easily addressed if they added a search option specific to each theme or plugin. Would save thousands of man hours and make the whole forum work so much more efficiently.

Hopefully they’ll do something about it soon, but I’m not holding my breath.

    FrankBukowski,

Imagine if I had held my breath for these past 8 months:
I’d be a dead puppy dog! Thank you for agreeing with my point of view. It’s nice to know that someone else might share it.

I’d copy and paste your and my comments on this topic to a different location for better exposure, but some “moderator’ would probably delete it, instead of properly responding to it.

What do you want a moderator to respond to this thread for?

    Mr. Nevins,

I don’t, and I probably should have worded my last comment a little bit differently. I think that Frank is correct in that this thread probably should have been originally posted by me in a WordPress forum that was closer to the Core Developers so it could be used for ALL themes. It is just that I could see that the Customizr Theme was taking off, and the number of forum entries would continue to multiply. Frank is the only person who has responded in an 8 month period, so maybe WordPress Core Developers never saw it.

I mentioned moderator intervention because in the past, I and others have posted threads (here and throughout WordPress.org) which individual moderators have deleted because he/she/they: didn’t like them, thought they were inappropriate, thought they were posted in the wrong place, thought they weren’t necessary, or for whatever reason the moderator saw “fit”.

In the past, I personally have duplicated some of my previous posts from one location within WordPress.org forums to another, after I realized that the initial thread location wasn’t viewed by the people that could actually “resolve” the issue that I or others were concerned about. Several times a “Moderator” would delete one or the other, or prevent the new forum post from appearing in the new location.

As a forum participant (whether frequent or infrequent), it can kill the desire to give a darn, and want to participate at all. It can also lead to the opinion that some “Moderators” (Not you…I’ve never had this issue with you) let their “Title” go to their head, and authorize them to become “Little Dictators”. The only reason I revisited this forum thread today was that Frank’s comment was sent to my email address, and reminded me of this old post (I had given up on it, a long time ago).

OKaaay. That’s not really helpful but whatever.

    That’s better. πŸ˜‰

It’s odd when moderators moderate isn’t it? πŸ˜‰

I’m being light hearted about this and honestly on a Saturday I think everyone should too.

*Jan steps on soapbox and drives this topic way off topic*

Yes. Please do not do that. Duplicate topics really does make it harder for volunteers such you and I to provide support. The conversation gets going in multiple places for the same thing. That’s never been allowed and for good reason. That’s just not productive.

As a forum participant (whether frequent or infrequent), it can kill the desire to give a darn, and want to participate at all.

I’m sorry you feel that way. But if you’re going to participate in the forums I’m positive that you can appreciate that the guidelines in the forum welcome are adhered to.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Forum_Welcome

The welcome (and I really like that it’s titled “Welcome” that ’cause everyone should feel way) was put together by people (not me but as I said I like it) who gave it some good long thought.

It can also lead to the opinion that some “Moderators” (Not you…I’ve never had this issue with you) let their “Title” go to their head, and authorize them to become “Little Dictators”.

Seems that that comes with the job. Just the other day I was accused of being a “racist” for asking them to start their own topic. That was nice don’t you think? Yes I deleted that and reported the user to the list.

No one likes it when someone asks them to modify their behavior but frankly some people lose their minds at the smallest things. Calling moderators abusive, dictatorial and (my personal favorite) “power mad” is ridiculous and offensive.

*Hops of soapbox goes back on topic*

I don’t think that’s bad idea but keep in mind that “Better search” has been on the To-Do list for a looong time. πŸ˜‰

    (@shapeshifter-3)

I’ve been allowed my participation and am happy with it; so I’m going to move on to lunch (Kibbles and Bits). Maybe someone else can figure out how to prod the Core Developers to add individual Search Bars to each Theme and Plugin forum.

    Arf! Arf!

Sorry if I ignited a debate there guys. Jan, if ‘better search’ has been on the to-do list for a long time, and a lot of people have requested it, do you have any idea when it’s likely to be moved to the ‘done’ list? Not sure how much contact you moderators have with WP’s core developers and planners.

I do think they, the elusive people who build and maintain the WordPress.org site, take notice of what’s going on in the forums as that’s how the improved search was on their todo list in the first place. It doesn’t sound right contacting them to improve the urgency of the matter.

Okay, thanks for letting us know. Cheers.

There’s already a trac ticket about this. If it was super easy, it’d be done, but in all likelyhood will wait until we move to the new version of bbPress, so… it’ll be a while.

I know saying “We know” sucks to hear, but we DO know, we DO want to fix it, and it’s just not that easy :/ If someone with a genius solution wants to jump in with the actual code to fix it, it’ll be done faster. Until then, you gotta wait.
