Support » Everything else WordPress » 301 redirects and page raking

  • Hello all,

I recently transferred my blog from one address to another, but the techno invalid that I am, I didn’t realise that I had a page ranking on my original blog (and quite a good one, considering).

I deleted my old site name, and subsequently lost my page ranking. My old address (www.lauraexplorer89.wordpress.com) still has the page ranking, even though it is no longer in use (and I cannot access it).

Is there a way that I can get my page ranking back and transferred onto my new site (www.travellers-ink.com) as it’s exactly the same site, just under a new name. Someone mentioned 301 redirects, but I don’t know how to do this!

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Laura

    – Experience indicates that the ranking picks up again pretty quickly.

    – If you make a Google Webmaster account and resubmit your site for crawling, it fixes it pretty fast.

    – If you really want to have to resort the 301s, you can 301 redirect all old URLs to the new ones; or redirect the old site to new one as a flat redirect, instead of per article.

You can look into some redirect plugins in the WP plugin repository.

Also, for 301 .htaccess Redirect, review this : http://ndesign-studio.com/blog/301-htaccess-redirect

Hey guys, thanks for your replies.

I’ve verified my site with Google, but I’d like to set up a 301 redirect.

However, I am unsure of how to do this. Is there a simple guide? All I can find are pages explaining what a 301 redirect is, but not how to implement one.

Also, can I do it from my new site, as I can’t get into my old one now that it’s been closed?

    Sorry – I need 301 for dummies!

The guide cited above by Tara is quite simple. Have you tried it?

can I do it from my new site, as I can’t get into my old one now that it’s been closed?

Possibly not because the 301 status code means that a page has permanently moved to a new location.

    Hi Krishna,

Yes, I did have a look at the site Tara cited, but as I have no idea about WordPress lingo; I’m afraid I don’t know where my site’s root folder is; I can’t find the .htaccess file; I don’t know what software I’m using (FTP Client or otherwise), all I know is that I’m using wordpress.com; it doesn’t say how or why I need to edit the .htaccess file once I do find it, or what I’m supposed to do with it afterwards.

As I said, I’m a complete beginner and, forgive me, but because I am trying to learn step by step, and because I don’t know any better, the post appears to be the start of a ‘how-to’ guide but never actually gets to the ‘how-to’ bit.

    all I know is that I’m using wordpress.com;

    – wordpress.com Forum: http://en.forums.wordpress.com/

Oh just re-read the OP – you are on the wrong forums entirely – you need to be here:

    http://en.forums.wordpress.com/

These forums are for self-hosted WordPress.ORG sites.

    (I though you’d moved to a self-hosted site – but that’s evidently not the case…)

Ah ha! That’ll be why none of this works for me then… Thanks!
