My WordPress site used to look ‘clean,’ like a Website…recently, the Search, Archives and Meta widgits have started showing up on the side on every page: http://www.c-riede.com/

When I go into my dashboard, all of these widgits are in the inactive box.

There are four footers in the sidebar (Footer 1, Footer 2, etc) that I can’t move.

Is there anything I can do to get these off of the website?

  • Hi car523 – are you running on wordpress.com? The hosted version? This support site is for wordpress.org, self-hosted. Support for wordpress.com is here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/

In terms of your layout question, did you update your theme recently? What if you delete the widgets entirely (don’t just make them inactive)?

What you called “footers in the sidebar” – those are showing up in the Appearance->Widgets screen? If so, those can’t be removed, they are a part of how your theme is coded.

Your layout looks pretty much identical to the main page of the Portfolio theme site, so you may want to hit up the theme developer for some help: http://wptheming.com/2010/07/portfolio-theme/

Thanks for replying. The Website is hosted on Bluehost–when I click on the WordPress Support Forums in the Bluehost cPanel, it brings me here.

I think I know what may have happened…when I first installed the theme, it was called ‘Portfolio’ (this was in 2010). I vaguely recall seeing notices that that theme was going to be discontinued and another one would be switched in that was similar. I hadn’t been on my website much the past year or so but have been updating lately and noticed this change…I think the new theme substitute is very like the original Portfolio except for this quirk.

I’m thinking I’m just going to change themes…I want it to look like a website, not a blog. I had worked hard to get it that way in 2010…but now it looks like a blog! If it’s written in the code, not much I can do.

Looks like your site is currently using this theme:

    http://wordpress.org/themes/portfolio-press

According to the description, there is a full-width template, which should get rid of the sidebar.

If you want to stick with that theme, you could ask about it on the theme’s forum here: http://wordpress.org/support/theme/portfolio-press#postform

One great part of WordPress is the ability to change themes so you should be able to find one that works as you want it.

I saw something in the code of your site that was pointing to wordpress.com so I thought you might be on the hosted platform. You’re definitely in the right place to get help for .org stuff.

I will try to post on the theme’s forum, thanks for that link, WPyogi!

And, if it doesn’t work out, I can find another theme…which is definitely something I love about WordPress.
