FTP takes longer than regular WP upload, why?

    When I try to use FireFTP to upload files to my hosting company it takes longer than uploading thru WP. 7 PDF files total 90MB, each file is taking about 10 min to upload. Anyone knows why?
    I have 1,000 more files to upload and need a faster solution or fix to this problem.
