I have been using and developing for wordpress for a long time, and decided to install it as the website engine for a new site I am working on.

I unzipped the files, chmodded and chowned all the files then proceeded to the install script. Using the web interface I entered the configuration options needed, hit save and was presented with the error no wp-config file exists, try creating with the web interface…

I got around this by manually configuring wp-config.php

Next I moved on to the permalink layout, selected the one I wanted: /%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/%postname%/ hit save and was presented with the message Permalink Structure Updated! But the .htaccess file is unchanged! And obviously the permalinks are not working!

Am I being utterly dumb or is this a bug?!

Ok, I was being dumb, I got my chown command wrong. Basically the webserver user did not have access to the directory. However, WordPress used to say the file was unwritable and throw up an error.

Actually, it is not showing an error but it says “time to change your htaccess file” or something like that… AND it shows you what you need to paste into the file.
