In WP, sidebar is a wrong terminology, but it’s too late to change, when you say sidebar in WP it means a whatever-bar. It could be a head-bar or side-bar or foot-bar.
Front page template of Twentytwelve doesn’t have a sidebar on the side, it has a sidebar in the footer.
That’s often due to unclosed or extra div tags in the HTML code – validating the page usually finds them:
Plugins can cause those kinds of errors or your content might have mark-up errors.
If not that, check the CSS using a browser tool like Firebug.
We’d need to see the page to be more specific help.
Oh, but if you mean on a smaller screen – the sidebar is designed to go below the content – that’s typical of responsive sites.
No, its full screen. I’ll validate and check the CSS…
I’m using the 2012 theme right “out of the box” -haven’t changed anything.
I’ll try removing some widgets (changing their width didn’t do anything) and see if I discover the culprit there also. Apologies for “wrong terminology” not up on all the appropriate lingo. Thanks for the help.
Describing:
Front Page Template – it has a widget section that I want to appear next to the main content section in a column to the right with widgets, etc. Currently: The main content section goes all the way across the page and the widgets appear at the bottom -above the footer- (at full screen).I have this on a local test server so can’t post a link for you to see what I’m talking about.
Front page template of Twentytwelve doesn’t have a sidebar on the side, it has a sidebar in the footer.
So in the Front Page Template of Twentytwelve, whatever WP is refering to as “sidebar” is actually a whatever-bar that is located at footer area.
TwentyTwelve has 3 whatever-bars.
One is a whatever-bar that is located on the side of content, this whatever-bar is not being called when using Front Page Template.
Here is a demo of first whatever-bar in action
http://twentytwelvedemo.wordpress.com/sample-page/The other two whatever-bars are used in Front Page Template only, and their locations are down below in the footer (above site’s credit line at bottom). The left one is a bit wider than the right one.
Here is a demo of the other two whatever-bars
http://twentytwelvedemo.wordpress.com/That is a Front Page Template in action, the MEET THE TEAM is the left whatever-bar, the RECENT POSTS is the right whatever-bar used in Front Page Template of Twentytwelve.
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain all of this! I understand now that I was trying to do something the theme template wasn’t meant to do.
…moving on to other possibilities!
Thanks again!
No problem !
In this case, you could use normal “page” template ( which will include sidebar on the side ) and set that page to be a front page of the site.
Set front page here:
Administration > Settings > ReadingTo have a sidebar of this front page displays different set of widgets from others, you could use this plugin to control the appearance of widget
