You have to write a name there, for ex MyWordPress, or anything that you like so that a directory will be created where WordPress will be installed. Where are are you installing WordPress? In a sub directory?
I want it installed on the main directory, not on a sub directory.
Is there anything already installed/ running on your root directory?
No, this is a new site, nothing previously installed.
Have you tried to contact hosting support or read instructions on auto installer for WordPress?
I am having the same issue today. Never happened before.
Godaddy server and can’t install to the root directory. Contacted support at godaddy but that’s like asking my cat what’s wrong. Those clowns never have a clue.
@smack_dabb: It is impolite to interrupt another poster’s ongoing thread with a question of your own. It causes significant problems for the forum’s volunteers and prevents us from being able to track issues by topic. Please post your own topic.
Oh, thanks everyone:
@krishna – we have talked to host they don’t support 3rd party scripts… and here’s the instructions, we’re doing everything here:

Thanks @esmi for giving so much to the forums, seems like this is partially on topic
Thanks @smack_dabb for sharing about the issue, sounds like your having the same problem regardless of the host, cPanel site software install “can’t install to the root directory” on 3.5.1.
It almost seems to me this is a bug, any thoughts on how to proceed? Can anyone else confirm or try a Cpanel site software WordPress install on 3.5.1 and see if it will allow an install in the root?
If this is a bug (and I’m guessing it will probably be described as a “feature”), then it’s in the Site Software Install on cPanel rather than WordPress. I’ve not used this installer myself – only Fantastico and Installatron (the latter being the better app). So I can’t really comment on how to wrangle this particular installer.
Why not just do the install manually? Takes about “2 minutes” 🙂
Create the database and database user:

Upload the WP files to the root of your account:

@2ninerniner2 by using the site software install, configurations are made that hook the sql database into server backups. So using the manual install would require extra steps to get sql backups in our scenario. Of course there are simple ways to get backups too, but better for the site software install to work as it has been.
