   I want my users to be directed back to the main page of the site after logging in, rather than going to the dashboard first. How can I change this?

   Then why do they have to login...?
   Anyway, search for "login redirect"

   LOL, I see you ask that same question every time. I want my users to be Contributors by default, but I know most of them will not want to bother with writing posts, only comments. So.... it makes more sense to send them back to the main page.
