Recent changes hide many options on the "Create New Post" page, making them available through an "Advanced Editing" disclosure button. This cleans up the post page nicely. "Comments", and "Pings" are rarely changed, so assuming the defaults for these rather than asking every time is sensible. Rearranging the post status into "Save as Draft", "Save as Private", and "Publish" buttons is also nice.
Right now, the "Advanced Editing" disclosure button is to the right of the "Publish" button. Since "Publish" is the affirmative button, it should be right-most. Perhaps "Advanced Editing" could be moved left-most or placed on a separate line.
Once on the advanced editing page, "Post Status", "Comments", and "Pings" are not set to the defaults. "Post Status" is set to "Draft" and "Comments" and "Pings" are unset. Shouldn't the "Post Status" radiobox be broken up into buttons as it was on the preceding page? As it is, the button layout is quite different between the two, and "Publish" is not bolded even though it is right-most.
Further, even though I do not click any of the save buttons on the advanced editing page, a draft is created. Simply entering the advanced editing page starts a draft. All drafts are listed at the top of the "Create New Post" page. Since I was entering and exiting the advanced editing page several times while looking over the new UI, I now have several empty drafts. How do I rid myself of them via the UI? There doesn't seem to be a way to delete abandoned drafts.
Anyway, just some suggestions. I like the simplification of the "Create New Post" page as a result of the "Advanced Editing" disclosure addition.

Posted 5 years ago #Whereas I don't like the pings and comment status being moved away from the post page and think that things have gone too far in the name of simplification. The four functions added to the 'advanced editing' page are all part of making a new post and thus should be in the place where this post is made. It is not good design to force users to do something simple in two steps when it could be done in one. Why make posting harder than it needs to be?
Clicking an extra link and opening a new screen to do those things adds a lot of time, particularly right now when you have to do this for every post you want comments on (which is most of them), for no real reason. They are such small boxes, they don't take up much screen real estate or add any noticable download time. On the other hand, opening a whole new page for these functions takes a lot of time. I don't have a fast connection and the difference in time it takes to make a post with this spilt version is considerable.
Being able to open or close comments and pings was one of my main reasons for upgrading from b2. Please stop hiding this functionality and move them back to the main post page where they belong. -
We're going to add an option so you can use the advanced form as your first post screen. Calm down. :)

Posted 5 years ago #When you click on the link for a draft, the edit page that opens contains the option (at the very bottom) to delete the post.

Posted 5 years ago #Great, I like this idea :) I can totally understand making it option, but I don't understand always keeping it separate.
Sorry if I sounded agitated, I really didn'tmean to. But I slowly realised that I was dreading updating my blog because of all the extra effort and was in fact posting less (still am actually). For me personally this is a fairly major useablility issue and if it stayed the way it currently is it would probably eventually send me back to b2. And I love all the other stuff in Wordpress (including the separation of posting and editing screen) so I'd hate that.
The only other thing I don't in the new layout like is how when I'm done editing an entry it sends me to the post screen. Just because I changed an old entry doesn't mean I want to make a new one. I'd much rather be sent back to where I started, ie the editing entries page. Particularly as I tend to edit more than one at once, like when I've made a new category and I'm moving old entries into it. This is much more of a personal preferance thing though rather and a general useability issue. -

Posted 5 years ago #I'm running 0.72 and 1.0 on different servers and I have to say my personal preference is for the older interface. This is backend stuff; I'd rather have everything to hand than tidied away, since nobody but me is going to see it anyway. But that's just me :)

Posted 5 years ago #I think making the default page you land on the edit page instead of the post page would solve most of my problems. I'm going to try this set up for a little while and see how I like it.
If you want to do this, here is what you need to change. Open up post.php and locate this code around line 110:
if ('' != $HTTP_POST_VARS['publish']) $post_status = 'publish';
and change it to:
if ('' != $HTTP_POST_VARS['publish']) {
$post_status = 'publish';
$location = 'edit.php';
}
I'm not completely sure that handles all situations, so I added this as well around line 123 and line 130 (inside the if and the else clause, after the INSERT queries):
$location = 'edit.php';
There are cleaner ways to do this, but this gives you a pretty good idea of how it would feel having the edit page be the default.
Bookmark the edit.php page instead of the post.php page to complete the transformation. :)
I'll be interested to hear if this is a configuration you like better. I think I do. -
Posted 5 years ago #I like the idea of the edit page being the default. I'm always landing on the post page and thinking "what am I doing here again?". I do a lot more maintenance and mucking around inside my blog than I do making posts. But

Why not just turn comments on by default in the Default Post Options settings page? -
Hrmm... My Default Post Options page looks just fine. Somebody else mentioned that as well (or maybe it was just you in a different thread... lol). Have you tried upgrading to a newer nightly build, first wiping out your old files? There seems to be a lot of problems people are having when they upgrade and some files don't get overwritten... Just a thought.
However, I DID just notice that crazy draft post bug... no way to delete drafts until they're published! Doh! :) -
Posted 5 years ago #Actually, a few of those options pages are blank. When I did my upgrades I deleted everything else first so that shouldn't have caused it. Specially as it's the same using 1.0.1 as it was using 1.0 (both times I deleted all old files before upgrading). I haven't upgraded to any nightly builds because when the upgrade to 1.0.1 didn't change anything I assumed that those parts just weren't finished. I'll have a go at upgrading it again, um, when I get time. Which probably won't be til next weekend now.
You can see why I'm currently finding using wordpress frustrating though, it appears that I'm missing a whole bunch of stuff. -

Posted 5 years ago #I've noticed (but not found it mentioned here after searching) that going from post to advanced editing and then clicking on the menu to go to a different page without posting anything leaves a blank draft when returning to the post screen.
I presume this is a bug.
I agree with shelleycats post about the advanced editing functions. What about using javascript and css to toggle the other bits into view instead of having two seperate pages. I know it was said that there would be am option to have the advanced editing page as the default but I think being able to toggle advanced functions from the basic post screen may be better. -

Posted 5 years ago #I've finally been able to try reintstalling wordpress. My main computer broke hence the delay (and the lack of logged-in-ness). All the new template features are still there but several of the options pages are still totally blank. I have another version of wordpress running and they are fine in there. The only difference between the two is that the main/broken one is an upgrade from b2. I have no idea if that will be causing the problem. I'd rather like a fully functioning version of wordpress and it is vital that all the old b2 posts remain. Any advice on how I can acheive this? Should I possibly start this as a new thread as it's a different (albiet related, for me anyway) problem?
