With BP 1.7 you do not need GenesisConnect. Some Genesis features no longer work on the BP pages when you use the theme compatibility (ex. the primary sidebar is always shown regardless of your site layout selection in the Genesis Settings).

See http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/genesis-connect-for-buddypress/other_notes/ for themes not included in the supported list.

    You’re welcome.

We’re using Buddypress 1.8. with a custom theme. Do I need this plugin?

What do you mean by “when you use the theme compatibility?” My primary sidebar always shows up even when I specifically tell my pages to use a template file that uses __genesis_return_full_width_content. How can I prevent that from happening?

Also, how can I override template files for, say, the groups-loop.php file? If I put the file in themes/custom/activity/ folder or themes/custom/buddypress/ the groups-loop is still not over-ridden. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong? I don’t know whether we should be using this plugin or not.

Post a thread at the BuddyPress support forums.

    Hi @ron,
Does this thread mean that installing this plugin is not longer a best practice for anyone using BP 1.7 or greater?
Are there any customizations which will help integrate BP and Genesis?
    Thanks for your help!

Can you provide a link to where someone indicated it was a best practice?

It’s up to you whether you use Genesis Connect or not. The only thing I said above was that as of BP 1.7 Genesis Connect is no longer necessary.

If you are planning on doing any amount of theme customizations, GC will make customizing easier for you.

    Hi Ron,
    Thanks for the information.
We’re likely going to be doing extensive customization to BuddyPress.
Can you please point me in the right direction for ways it will make customizations easier?
    Thanks again,
    Josh
