Hi there :) Alright this is kind of messy...

My wordpress blog is http://bad-behavior.com/blog. My site had been up and running normally for months, when all of the sudden, out of nowhere, I get a 500 Internal Server Error when I try to access my blog. It not only happened to my wordpress blog but also my coppermine gallery located at http://bad-behavior.com/gallery.

I was running version 2.2, today I tried upgrading to 2.3 by overwriting all files in my /blog directory. However I can't even run the upgrade.php script because it gives me the 500 internal server error.

I contacted my host about it last week. He said that the problem was my php code, which obviously isn't the case because I reuploaded everything with the v2.3 files.

Does anybody know what could be causing that error? Is it a database issue? I guess I can try a fresh install of wordpress and then import my old database. But if anybody knows an easier fix or even how it may have happened I would be much appreciative. Thanks!

Delete your htaccess and see what happens. Your permalinks won't work, but you'll at least know whether this is being caused by an error in htaccess.

Tell your host he's full of it. Running code rarely throws a 500 error, 500 error is a webserver error. Bad .htaccess or server misconfiguration can do that, php code doesn't generally do that.

Thanks for the replies. Yes deleting the .htaccess file was the first thing I tried, didn't work unfortunately. I thought it possibly had something do to with my host upgrading to PHP5? When I ran a phpinfo off my server it said the build date was 9/22/07 or something recent like that, which is around the time this started happening.

It really has to be something with my host because my friend has a wordpress blog on the same server (http://incognitolatino.com) and it happened to hers also.. but what caused it to happen is whats baffling me.

May need to up your PHP memory. Usually 16M will do, but might need more...

Got any log files you can check? Believe it or not I read something today on the wp-testers email where the person has PHP memory set to 192M or so to finish an upgrade. Interestingly in that thread, someone describe 32M as 'slim'.

    Thread on wp-testers:

One of my friends managed to fix my blog by using this plugin http://txfx.net/code/wordpress/wordpress-tuneup/ and since he couldn't activate the plugin in the admin panel (because it would throw a 500 code) he manually activated it in phpmyadmin. Yay for smart, patient and awesome friends!!

Thanks for all your replies. Now I gotta work on my Coppermine gallery 500 internal server error problem.

I am still having trouble with this on my wedding photography website Furious Photographers

Each time I enable pop-up comment, I hit the error. If I leave it alone, then it is all right. Some people recommended deleting the htaccess file, but I have no idea what that even does. Help? :(

Sometimes it's a plugin you installed does that.
In my case I installed the "Google Analyticator" plugin and got the error message as soon as I activated.
Solution: I removed the pluging via FTP and the site went normal.

Try setting your permalink to default.. I think alot of people are having the same issue.I had thgis probelm on one of my databases and I had to remove (Delete althogether) all my plusgions and readd then in. I am having trouble with a second database and may have to do the same there. I think it has somthing to do with a conflict with cacheing methods. I am thinking off the topof my head here having been up all night trying to get the F**ooker working
