Cant install a theme – home page looks like a blog

Please help!
I am trying to install the ‘responsive’ theme. When I activate it and look at my website http://www.hireasushichef.com the theme just looks like a blog page not a home page. The home page does not look as it should (with the Hello World on the left and the image of the different screens on the right). Mine just looks like a blog – not like the professional looking website theme.
I have tried installing other themes and I have the same problem – The only theme that views correctly is the WordPress default theme.
What am I doing wrong?
Please help – I’ve spent 3 hours just trying to do this – arrrggghhh!!
