Support » Fixing WordPress » Replace […] at end of posts with linked [more…]?

  • I’m new to WordPress so be gentile…

On post “listing” pages, only part of the post shows up (a summary) and it ends with a […]

That seems fairly non-intuative to me, so I’d guess other people that don’t know how WordPress blogs “work” will also be confused.

I’d like to replace the […] with something more obvious like [more…] that is a link to the full post (like the title is).

I’ve looked but have not found a plugin to do that.

So How would I accomplish this?

  • i believe the easiest solution would be to edit the index.php in your theme directory, because it is hard-coded in there.

Start with a look at Customizing_the_Read_More

Not to contradict HS – but the […] appears at the end of the excerpts, when the multipost template files (archive.php, category.php etc.) have the_excerpt template tag instead of the_content.

You can replace the tag and use the resources suggested above or you can use a plugin like the_excerpt_reloaded

No worries moshu. I linked that page as it begins with discussion about the_content vs the_excerpt.

So I’ve read that page a few times now, and unless I’m missing something, or just completly retarded, I don’t see how I would use that to replace the […] bit with something else that is actually linked to the full post, unless I manually include that <!…more…> tag in my post.

However, that the_excerpt_reloaded totally kicks ass!

Now I can get images, etc. in my excerpts and everything! Whee!!!

    Thanks folks!
