   how do I sort order for the categories?

   Assuming you mean change the sort order of categories in something like your sidebar, the look at the template tag, wp_list_categories() and the orderby and order parameters.

   I use the category order plugin as I keep adding categories and sub-categories... and they wind up out of alphabetical sequence in the sidebar.
