Okay, so I didn’t listen and instead of making a child theme modified the main them. I now see the error of my ways, for the theme has come out with an update and I don’t want to download it since it’ll wipe out my modifications. Is there a way to fix this? Can I create a child them and then swap them?

Lmao… I’m sorry. But, I LOVE your attitude!! This will def be the highlight of my day!! There is no better lesson in life… than a self-taught lesson!!

    Okay… so… hmm.

Where are your modifications? Are they CSS… or template?

You can use a program to compare one file against another.. and see where the changes are located. But, you want to make sure you are comparing to the “old” version of the theme you are using, not the new one.

Then, make a list of the differences in an external document… so you can go back once you upgrade and re-make the changes.

This is the best route I can think of… since I don’t know of anything which “automates” this process.

I can definitely own up to my own mistakes. 🙂 I think I have fixed everything, though. As it turns out, I hadn’t made that many modifications so was able to easily make them again on the child theme. So when I update the parent theme it won’t affect the child theme, right?

I believe you can keep your theme just as it is by making a copy of it as a Child Theme…

…then use another theme altogether for just long enough to update your present theme that will remain a parent (or just replace it altogether with a fresh copy of the updated theme), then remove from the Child Theme the files you have *not* changed, then do as Josh has suggested to compare the remaining files with the ones in the updated theme and copy into the Child Theme any updates you might find.

Just curious how this turned out??

@leejosepho, that’s a great idea. I’ll have to give that a shot the next time a client performs this same “all-too-common” mistake! Thanks for the suggestion!
