Best way to run a newsletter for WP ecommerce site?

I’m setting up a WordPress based small business site for a relative, and want to have mailing list functionality to inform customers of product updates and promotions. There seem to be quite a lot of plugin available, so I’m wondering if anybody has a recommendation. I’m looking for something reliable, professional, and (hopefully) free, but I also would like the system to be user-friendly. Thanks!
