[resolved] 2.3 Upgrade Problem (28 posts)

When I extract the 2.3 files, overwriting my 2.2.3 installation, and go to http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php, it displays only a blank page. In fact, NO pages display on my site when I try to hit them under 2.3. I've followed the instructions under http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am stumped!

    Thanks!

I had the same thing happen to me. My theme wasn't compatible with 2.3

Make sure you deactivate all plugins and use the default wordpress theme. Once you have it working with this, then you can start to turn things back on.

Thanks for the tip. I will try that and report back how it goes!

I am not sure if this should be posted in this topic or if I should start another topic. However I felt that the title of this topic was well fitting for my issue.

To begin with I am a bit disappointed with this upgrade and feel a bit let down by it due to the aggravation that it is causing. Generally I find the information for upgrade to be generic, general, and not relating to the specific upgrade.

Personally I like 2.2.3 better and do not believe 2.3 is worth the hype. After the install I noticed the following error message

WordPress database error: [Table 'expressi_wp_2.wp_categories' doesn't exist]
    SELECT COUNT(*) FROM wp_categories

This message shows consistently with all admin associated with categories (e.g. Manage>Categories>add new categories and My Dashboard)

I have checked MySQL database expressi_wp_2 and wp_categories categories does not exist. Furthermore I have disabled all plug-ins that could in some way relate to categories and that has not resolved the issue.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Restore your backup to 2.2.3?

No, I'm not being a smart-aleck! This upgrade isn't mandatory (yet) as it isn't a security release.

Or, to address your error, disable plugins, re-enable individually until you find the one that needs to be updated. The 2.3 Announcement post gives a link to the Plugins Compatibility page -- you might check it.

Hrm. I backed up my 2.2.3 installation, deactivated ALL my plugins, and set my site's theme to WP Default. I then unarchived the 2.3 files over my 2.2.3 install.

When I went to http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php, it displayed only a blank page. I tried it in IE7, FireFox, and via the command line (lynx http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php) with the same result. Attempting to hit http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin forwards the link to http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php, so I am stuck.

I've had to roll back to 2.2.3. I would really like to upgrade to 2.3, but am completely stumped. Can someone please help me?

I had a similar problem that was alleviated by updating the permalinks.

JaneLitte... Did you update permalinks BEFORE or AFTER overwriting your 2.2.3 files with the 2.3 files?

I don't see how I could update Permalinks AFTER the upgrade since pages don't display...

Oh, you are correct. I did that after. Did you apply the login.php patch. I don't know if that would work.

Do you have wp-cache installed? You might try to delete that and change your config.php file back to its default state (without the wp-cache line).

Hm, I'm happy that I tried 2.3 on my test database, since it completely wrecked the site. After upgrading I also had the blank dashboard. After trying some things I tried to completely delete all WP files and install from scretch, but this doesn't work either! No 2.3 for the actual website before I figured out what is wrong with it!

I deleted 2.3 alltogether, installed 2.2.3 and it works like a charm! No 2.3 for me I guess.

I backed up my 2.2.3 installation, deactivated ALL my plugins, and set my site's theme to WP Default. I then unarchived the 2.3.1 files over my 2.2.3 install.

When I went to http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php, it displayed only a blank page. I tried it in IE7, FireFox, and via the command line (lynx http://www.mysite.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php) with the same result. Eventually I managed to get to 2.3.1 (my earlier postings were about 2.3) with relatively few problems. It proved that the version of the theme that I used didn't work with 2.3.1, but fortunately there was a newer ones. There are also some plugins that don't work with 2.3 so be carefull with them as well. It seems that you worked quite thoroughly. I can only recommend to upload 2.3.1 again, maybe a file got corrupted because your computer did something else when it was tranferred. If that doesn't work, maybe just delete WP alltogether (don't touch the database of course) and upload 2.3 from scratch.
    Good luck.........

Thanks for your reply, Gangleri... I'll try it again this evening when I get home from work.

Does anyone else have any suggestions? This is the most trouble I've ever had with WordPress!

I tried Gangleri's suggestions and the same result -- not working -- occured.

Please, can anyone assist me? I feel I've done everything that has been suggested, and would appreciate some of the big-brained WordPress users bending their thoughts to this problem!

I find solution in my case. Reason was plugin dd-formmailer. After I delete it everything is ok. Then I upload same plugin again and activate it and now all works like charm.

Hi, I attempted to upgrade to 2.3.1 and received these two errors:

Warning: main(./wp-blog-header.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/happybur/public_html/index.php on line 4

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required './wp-blog-header.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/happybur/public_html/index.php on line 4

What do I do to resolve/fix?

    Help please. Thank you!

After upgrading a blog from 1.5 to 2.3.1, all pages that were not in wp-admin showed up blank.

When comparing /index.php with /wordpress/index.php (the former being "old", as in "already there in 1.5), I found out that in the NEW index.php, there's a define before the wp-blog-header.php file is included. After adding that to the /index.php file, everything was peachy again:

    define('WP_USE_THEMES', true);

This makes perfect sense, of course, but since you get NO OUTPUT whatsoever, it's a bit hard to figure out. Hope this helps someone.

Be sure your theme is compatible with 2.3.1, that was the problem that my pages remained blank.

I switched back to the default WP theme and the problem persists.

You are quite likely getting a PHP error. It is even possible that you have a version of php to old to run 2.3.

The way I would solve the problem relies on the fact that I have telnet/ssh access to my servers and have access to check the error log generated by PHP.*

So, I would log in via putty ssh and run this line:
    sudo tail -f /var/log/httpd/error_log

That's a fairly standard located file but I can't tell you if you require the sudo or not or if you even have access to php's error log. But if that works for you, you will have more information than you did before...

*Footnote: This also assumes that PHP is configured with log_errors=on. This can be checked by creating a php file calling

    <?php
     phpinfo();
    ?>

That will tell you the php version and you can search for log_errors

Thank you for your reply, Brian. I also have telnet/SSH access to my machine, so I think we're on a good path here. I will attempt the upgrade again shortly and will monitor the PHP log as you suggested.

For the record, my log_errors is ON, and my PHP version is 5.1.6. I believe that version of PHP is more than sufficient to run WP (as it is currently running 2.2.3).

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

Brian... Thanks again for your guidance. Your suggestion to use "tail" led me to a permissions error on my /wp-admin/includes directory that was preventing the upgrade. Fixed that and the upgrade went fairly smoothly.

I´ve been following this thread since I have the exact same problem as Vogelap (as described in her/his first post here).

But how do I solve it like Brian suggested? He wrote "log in via putty ssh and run this line: sudo tail -f/var/log/httpd/error_log"

I don´t now what putty ssh is? I have my site at a web hotel, does that matter? If my question seem stupid it´s becaue I don´t understand much of php and databases :)

I´m very thankful for any help.

One more possible solution added to the mix:

My host suggested that there is a small incompatibility in 2.3.x with PHP 5.

The suggested solution: In the file wp-includes/taxonomy.php in 2.3.3, on line 11, 12 and 13 "(object)" needed to be removed before the array.

This edit solved the blank page installation issue for me. Hope this helps someone.
