   After I update the settings, everything is fine, then the number of posts resets itself to the wrong number.

   I'm using the generalstats plugin. I tried another plugin and it did the same thing.

   i got no idea, what you are talking about. - what means reset to the wrong number? maybe you can provide another hint or a link...
