Just as a follow up, I managed to get back in (don’t ask me it just came back in about 15 minutes).

I also managed to update the plugin however I had to go directly into “Installed Plugins” and update from there. Updating from WordPress automatic updater (from the Update menu) will not work and keeps locking things up. even after loging out and back in I still have a message that says “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete – please attempt the update again now” that I can’t get rid of.

    Hi intowernet,
I’m sorry that you had to go through such a situation. And just for record, AAM does not print such a message. It must be some other plugin or WordPress Core.
I’m recommending you to install WP Bug Tracker plugin. This may catch some interesting issues with your system.

    Regards,
    Vasyl

    Vasyl,

You must have been right. By the second day another plugin was needing updated and updating it eliminated the problem. Sorry for jumping the gun. I tried to cover all the bases before posting anything.

    Thanks for your response.
