    Hey everyone,

I’m sort of new to all this, but I’ll try to be as specific as possible. A couple weeks ago, I noticed we were unable to edit our css due to a permissions issue. This sent me down the road to discovering that, not only were we unable to change these permissions, large sections of our wp-content folder had permissions set that would return an error message when we tried to change them. So we uninstalled WP, but kept our wp-content and index.php so we wouldn’t lose our content.

This solved some issues, like the css editing, but there are still places in the wp-content folder that will not allow permissions changes. In fact the entire wp-content folder is set at 0155 and will not change (we’d like to get it changed to 0755). It returns an error message saying the “operation not permitted” when we try to change it. We’ve done the file manager, legacy file manager, and an ftp program all to no avail.

This wouldn’t be such a big issue, but whatever’s happening keeps us from altering/installing/uninstalling/activating/deactivating/updating several plugins on the site.

We’ve also been in contact with our hosting provider as one thread here suggested, but they basically informed us that we would need to do a complete uninstall of the wp-content folder which (due to the permissions issue) is impossible as we cannot alter it with the current permissions. Nor would we want to as we’re quite fond of our content lol.

Anyway, any tips I could get from anyone would be very much appreciated and I’m happy to provide any additional information needed to resolve this issue. Thanks!

  • Your hosting company obviously has got no idea. If they can’t change the permissions for you then you should start looking for a new host. If you don’t have the permission to change the permissions there’s no way that you’ll be able to do what they tell you to.

One thing to remember though – deleting the wp-content folder isn’t a bad thing as long as you have a current backup of all of the files inside it. As long as you have a backup you can safely delete this off the server and then re-upload the files to the same location. This should (depending on the server setup) set the permissions correctly.

Thanks so much Cat! Yeah, I think I’ll try the host again tomorrow and hold their feet to the fire a bit more lol. If they can’t help me out, I’ll give the backup thing a try…hopefully I don’t screw it up too badly. I’ll repost when I know something else. Thanks again!

Just to close this out. We’re not sure what happened, but my hosting company finally went in and reset all permissions. It seems to have fixed whatever was going on. As seems to usually be the case it was a hosting issue (whatever it was) and not a WordPress issue. If you’re having the same, you should check with your host first. Thanks again Cat for responding!

Although, the hosting company did imply that it may have had something to do with a forum plugin we installed (Mingle). Not saying there was anything nefarious on their end. It may have just been a bad installation or something. Anyway, we’re all clear now.
