  • You cna change the name of a post/page and it won’t change the URL unless you change it manually. You’ll be able to see the URL just below the title field, and you’ll see that this won’t change unless you tell it to.

Is it ok to change the url name? like if the post was about dogs
mysite.com/why-dogs-bark would it be ok to change the whole post content, title and the url name to say mysite.com/why-cats-meow ? I changed my mind on what i want in my site after posts being up for a few months . Thanks cat

That’s changing the URL, not the blog title. There’s a big difference. The permalink URL can be completly different to the page title.

If you change the URL for the link, then yes you will end up with that page being considered as a “404 Not Found” error until the search engines index your site completely again. It’s easy enough to set up a 301 redirect using various different plugins that are available here.

But I’d actually suggest that you do a different thing if you only ant to change a coupel of articles and not the entire focus of your site. Write a new article, and keep the old one as well, maybe with a note added to the old article pointing to the new article. Why? Because your old article will already be indexed, so it’s out there now, but mainly because if you od this you’ll have two articles which is more content, more keywords for ranking and gives your site more for people to read.

Ok so when I change the title of the post why does it change what is shown in the url? Isnt that changing it ? You are probably going to want to slap me sure

No, that’s alright. I’ve heard questions on here that are whole lot worse! You’re not asking anything wrong so don’t worry. It’s all just trying to learn how the system works.

The URL doesn’t normally change if you edit the posts title after it’s been published. Every time that I’ve changed a title the URL has remained the same unless I actually want to change it. If the URL is changing for your posts/pages then it sounds like something isn’t quite right.

ok thank you so much ! it is changing btw every time I change the title. I thought that was a little weird

You can still edit it yourself if you want to. As I said before if you’re going to do a full re-direction of the idea of your blog then it’s not going to be a huge concern, but I’d still look at using a 301 redirection plugin for a few months at least, just in case.
