• Quick question about assigning multiple categories to a post.

From the wordpress site it says that if you use multiple categories for a post then it will be assigned to the “lowest numbered category.”

Doesn’t this create a problem as you continue to add more post to each topic? Does this mean that it will be defaulted to the category with the least amount of posts? Is there a way to set a “master” category to each post?

I know that the post will show up under each category that I assign but I would like more control over which category is the parent.

    Thanks,

    Truman

  • Seemingly you misunderstood something…
The posts ARE assigned to the category or categories as you choose it when writing or editing.

The sentence you were quoting refers ONLY to permalinks – and ONLY to the case when %category% is used in the permalinks structure.
As for parent and children relationship for categories you have full control!

    So what is your question?

1st of all, thanks for helping me out!

I think I should clarify…I should have said I want more control over my permalinks.

I am going to use widgets as an example…

I write a post about homemade charms and I want the post to show up in the categories:

    homemade charms
    charm ideas
    adult charms

My question is how to I control that the post uses the permalink: site/homemade/post-name and not in site/charm-ideas/post-name ?

Note – I want each category to be by itself and not under a parent category.

Did I ask the question right this time or am I still shooting blanks?

Thanks in advance for your time!

My question is how to I control that the post uses the permalink:[…]

I see. I am afraid you do NOT control it; I mean you can not because WP will go (as you’ve read in the Codex) by the lowest cat ID.
In your case I wouldn’t use the %category% in the permalinks.

interesting…What is another way around this?

I’d like to take advantage of a hierarchy that makes sense.

What permalink structure would you recommend?

    Thanks for your help!

Why not leave the category out and just use the post name? /%postname%
