New way to "Store uploads in this folder" since 3.5 removed it?

Instead of putting uploads in folders based on year and month, I used to just base them on year. I did this using the “Store uploads in this folder” option, which has been removed in version 3.5 according to the changelog at http://codex.wordpress.org/Settings_Media_Screen. Is there a new way I can define a custom upload folder? I haven’t been able to find one, and I’m sure I can’t be the only person who used to use that option. I’ve searched the support forums but all the topics I find are years old so the answer is to use the “Store uploads in this folder” option.
