Edit the gallery, click ‘set featured image’ on the lower right had side, click the ‘media library’ tab, and then just select the image you want to use, click ‘update’ and you’ll see the image you selected as the tumbnail for your gallery.
There is no option for “set feature image’

It’s the same thing, on the bottom right hand column of the gallery page you created there is a box called ‘featured image’, part of the wordpress page, not the part where you add the images to the gallery.
If you don’t see it then you are not editing the gallery, or you selected ‘quick edit’ and not edit under the gallery name on the listing.

WOW that is weird! I do not have that tab on my page.. thats where I am in the edit gallery and everything else is the same but that tab is not there
On the top right hand side of the gallery edit page, click on the ‘screen options’ tab, make sure the ‘featured image’ box is checked
There is not box that says ‘featured image’. 🙁

I have the same problem…
I would love to use the feature image, but this has an effect on the banner of my site (i’m using one of the original wordpress themes)
So if I chose an image of the gallery as feature image (and then thumbnail for the gallery) it will place this image as the banner, which will ruin the design of my site…
How can I easily set the thumbnail for my gallery without having to deal with this issue and whithout having to delete and the re-upload the same image constantly, cause it seems that Gallery takes the last uploaded image as a thumbnail for the gallery…

The feature image can not exist, if it doesn’t specify in the theme.
The standard themes allow this functional.
You are right, if the the feature image doesn’t specified, then takes the last uploaded images. Unfortunately, other variants don’t exist.
“this has an effect on the banner of my site” – How exactly? Please describe the problem in more details and provide a links, so that we could understand where is a problem.
