Indexing all posts (19 posts)

    Hello,
    Using 1.3 nightly 15-9-04
    2 questions:
1.Is there a possibility of indexing every post on a site which can then be listed and used as a means of referencing a site's contents?
    2. If I use a single post option on my site and also provide a category list - can the category call list a defined number of posts within that category? At the moment the category list simply pulls each single page which then needs to be navigated using next/previous page etc. I would like to show all the posts within a category when it is called.

I'm looking for a similar thing, at least in part 1 of his question:

How can I get an index listing of every post on my site? Like a sitemap but more as a tool for me rather than the public.

Well, that's basically what an archive page is, no? Are you wanting something in the admin panel itself, Lorelle?

I'm editing volumes of posts that I'm adding to WP which include links to articles within the site. I want to change these to the WP permalinks. I need a list of all the articles I've put in, in their permalink form, so when I'm editing the stuff, I can add or change the hyperlink.

Instead of going to the EDIT/MANAGE screen all the time to get the specific link, if I have them printed out with their links I can glance at the paper.

Maybe I can do this with the nicearchives page?

Hey, is there a way to add the post-slug or permalink name to the MANAGE screen? Hmmm, that might solve a lot of problems when it comes to finding the specific link to a post.

I think of all the people who link to other pages within their blog to connect the dots, and making this information easier to find would benefit all, not just me with my personal need.

    1. Like a table of contents?

    http://puffy.nu/~davos/pages/code/wp-toc/

Or more like a title index of all posts?

    2. No idea if it offers this, but take a look at Show Categories.

Sounds like you are on to something. Give it a shot!

I don't yet know why, conflict with another plugin I think, and I've let them know, but the wp-toc crashes on me. Big time. I love it and want to use it!

Nicer Archives is lovely, but in order to see the link, you got to move your mouse over it. Show Categories is the same way, as is toc.

I want to SEE the link, which is why I thought it might be cool to add it to the Admin MANAGE/EDIT screen so that others could see the links to their posts to speed up the process of cross linking between them.

How do you all make it more efficient to link between your different posts? Great memories, keeping a list, printing it out from the database, or what? It must be easier when using permalinks to remember the titles of the posts, but if you aren't using permalinks, how do you remember which post is 548 and which is 726?

I did find information in the codex for creating an HTML list of pages, with a huge warning that this is still under work order, at http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/wp_list_pages and I wonder if this might give me what I want.

    - - - -
I am having a problem that will have to be addressed here in the forum and in the codex. When is a page a page and a Page a Page? This is in reference to the new Pages feature in 1.5. In this particular Codex file, it says it can create a list of pages. Are these Pages or pages? See what I mean?

wp_list_pages is intended for the "static" Page feature in 1.5. It will not list all pages, etc. Just, uhh, Pages.

As far as I'm concerned, a Page should always be capitalized (just to signal the fact we're not talking about a page...yeah, confusing), and a non-Page "post" page is called a post, or single post page. All others are prefixed with their blog-specific terms (archive page, category page, etc.).

(I wish the devs had been more imaginative in naming the Page feature. But there you go.)

The "Page" terminology was somebody's worst ever idea :)

Is it too late to change to... anything else?

EDIT: Is there some appropriate publishing term out there like "leaf" or "spread" or something? I know this is a losing battle, but still.

Could call them Statics. Not strictly correct, but...

Nothing like a good tangent - the very BEST name to call these would be exactly what they are: Static Pages. They feature the header and sidebar stuff, but they remain the same, no matter what - so to speak.

The posts are transitional, and based traditionally upon one page, the index.php, changing and adjusting depending upon what the user is doing. Therefore, posts are posts and static pages stand still.

    =====
Station Break over, folks. How do you all get your list of "p"ages (post pages) so you can reference them in your posts....or Pages....? hee hee

Hmm. I don't have a list or reference...

which would be a major pain if took my 1,000 html page site and converted it to wp. No way to look over a list of pages... or figure out which one of them I really wanted.

at present I am using a dhtml/javascript navigation menu system for that site.

It might be easier to just leave it that way. I have made major rewrites to that site's nav, but I don't think wp would work for it.

You have a navigation system, but I'm just talking about posting a link within a post to another post, not a navigation.

So do you just go to your nav list and hold the mouse over, or right click copy shortcut and then paste it in, or what? How do you connect the dots between your pages when you reference one?

My large site doesn't have wp on it yet... I might do that to it someday, but I don't see it happening until months from now. I'm just too backed up in things to do.

The dhmtl/javascript menu system I have I downloaded and installed on my static pages. The url for it is on each page.

If there was a way to easily add wp and integrate it with the site, I would do so. but it doesn't look like they will work together.

Its my ad&d first edition site, if you are interested in the url, to get the menu system site, I'll post it.

I have...hmmm, lost count but more than 500 pages and I'm turning all of it over to WP. It can be done and I'll be posting the how to in the codex when I figure it all out. Parts of it are so easy, it's amazing. Other parts are very hard.

I personally am DONE with glorious javascripted stuff. That's one of the reasons I went PHP and choose WP. I've been playing with them for years and have had too many problems, especially trying to keep the site accessible.

But post the link. People love gizmos. I did. Now, I like simple. Low tech that looks high. ;-)

    thats it.
    http://crestar.drivein-jim.net/

over 1,000 pages, around 700 pngs, etc.

I tried to make the menu nav to have all pages listed on the upper most level... people started emailing me to say their computer locked up. Wasn't true... It turns out the dhtml/javascript slows way down if the menu.js gets over 14 kilobytes.

Just show page source and look for HV Menu, the dynamic drive site is the location of the original.

this is the page with the menu on it:
    http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex1/hvmenu/index.htm

    corrected the url.

Oh, I asked on dynamicdrive what was available to dhtml site nav that many pages.. no replies.

Hmm. I think I just, mentally, came up with a method to convert my crestar site to a blog.

I don't know if this would work and I would appreciate some feedback.

On my crestar site, link above, I could have categories/nations, towns and locales as sub-categories under each of those. Show thumbnails on those pages. Link to static pages with the large versions of the maps from there.

Seems to me it would work, but would it ?

    Thanks.
(Whew, probably take me a month or so to implement...)
