• I am using 2.0.7 on a server hosted installation. When I upload an image from the visual editor, it does not automatically generate a thumbnail (cannot choose thumbnail or original in image browser).

Is the WP software supposed to automatically build a thumbnail for this purpose?

Do I need a specialized plugin, or am I just missing a setting somewhere?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

WordPress automatically generates a thumbnail only on pictures that are 3 megapixels or less.

Examine the resolution of your image. Say it’s 1600 by 1200. Multiply those two together to get 1920000. Since that’s less than 3145728 (aka 3 megapixels), WordPress will generate a thumbnail for it.

If your pictures are bigger than that, then I recommend reducing them in size first (for web display, you’d want them smaller anyway).

In the case of me it may be a wrong server setting with umask for the thumbnails. I found a arr ‘hack’ at http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4151#comment:3 which solved the problem. If you examine your thumbnail files on the server and they have a 600 instead of the correct 644 permission then the link above helps you.
