• I have done some tweaking over time and finally brought my site to look the way I want it so I’m ready to show it off!

    http://www.standardexcellence.net

These are some important plugins in use:

    • Site layout customizer – using this plugin to basically format the main page, giving a “top story” headline, then the 3 different main categories below, followed by the next posts from any category below.
    • Page links to – makes the top level display a page, in this case the page is the one with the previous plugin’s shortcode.
    • StatPressV – a.k.a. “Statpress Visitors” – previously I used StatSurfer, but this is more like a full-featured version of it. Same developer.

There’s a few other plugins I use as well, like adsense and sharing widgets. Suggestions and feedback are very welcome! Even down to “you should use 15px padding instead of 25px here.”

  • I think you have found a great niche, the most important part for you will be to stick out from other news channels. Why do the visitors want to follow you and your blog and not go to the news station?

Find your touch on it and make it unique make them want to come back.

For a site like this you might want to add a email sign up so that you can notify readers when the next post is out.
Give away a free e-book related to the topic if they leave their email…

I would add a contact page with either your email or contact form.

As far as the Adsense ads I would wrap text around them.

I like the clean look of the site and you have an interesting topic.

    Keep writing!

Thanks for the good advice and suggestions. I’ve not experimented much with ad placement yet, but it might be time to do that soon.

As for the audience, some of them are people I meet at events I go to, and I focus on a lot of local or state things. I also look for things that the local news channels ignores and I think my (target) audience wants to know about.

It would be an awesome full time gig if it ever grows enough, basically it would be freelance journalism. … and a WordPress success story, of course 😉

Great job on your design; it’s clean, it’s simple and easy to read. Great use of color scheme and font colors. Text stands out “just in the right places”!

    Keep up the great work.

Thank you, willow & ken. Good to know the text stands out (as of course you want people to read your articles!).

Yeah I want to do more video. It’s that darned full-time job that keeps holding me back. 😉 If I keep working maybe I can get enough traffic to generate full-time revenue and then I won’t have that problem!
