A checkbox requires one or two values in the “value” field. If you have one, it only saves a value if the field is checked, if you have two, it saves the first value if it is unchecked, the second if it is checked.

Your checkbox should have No, Yes in the “values” field. There has to be a comma separating the values.
For a checkbox to be non-required, you just set the “validation” to “Not Required” no?
