If comments are useful for users and unique content and not spam and are included in the code rather than inserted via javascript than they can be helpful for SEO. But if you do not remove the spam comments then it can definitely make your pages appear to be low quality.

I wondered if Comment pages in WordPress have impact on SEO. Because before I used comment pages (load all comments on 1 page) all my comment content was on http://www.example/post and now it’s like http://www.example/post/comment-page-3
The page is now splitted in # different pages..
