I have been notified of new user registrations on my site, but how is that possible without my permission? As I see it, this can only be done via my Dashboard which is username/password protected.

  • Check in your settings to see if you have user registration enabled, I think it’s under Settings > Discussion.

If you have user registration disabled and users are still registering, it could be some sort of hack. But that’s not very likely, I’m just saying it’s possible.

Ok, I’ve now worked out what has been happening. By default the WP software allows anyone to register as a subscriber via a link under the domainname.com/wp-admin/login box. I cannot immagine why anone would want to do this because as a mere ‘subscriber’ you do not get access to anything other than a personal profile page where you can provide details such as the domain of your website. Maybe that’s why they register to get back links to their site for SEO purposes. Anyway, as Odel pointed out, you can disable this default setting by simply unchecking the box next to ‘anyone can register’ located in Settings>General on the Dashboard.
