    Hi

I'm a newbie to WordPress (since yesterday) so please be gentle.

I'm using WordPress 2.2.1, Apache version, 1.3.37 (Unix), PHP version 5.2.0, MySQL version 5.0.27-standard with Webhosting.uk.com.

I can create pages and posts that have only plain text in them.

I can't create pages or posts that have any kind of formatting (eg bold words/weblinks). As soon as I bold a word and try to save WordPress "crashes" into the "Index /" page with cgi folders etc.

I have looked at other posts but they either seem irrelevant or I don't understand!

I have completely reinstalled WordPress and the problem continues

It seems a little worrying that WordPress seems to be having a problem with something as basic as this!

Thanks in advance for any help (please!)!

No, WP doesn't have "problem" with making a post. The problem in 99% of the cases is at the user end. The remaining 1% is some odd server setup.

Are you using the wysiwig (Visual) editor?
What happens if you turn it off (in Users > Your profile)?

Thanks, tried turning off visual editor and exactly the same thing happens - when either editing an existing text page or creating a new one with bold words it won't save.

    Any further suggestions much appreciated

I am running out of ideas... unless seeing what happens when logged in - it is difficult to guess. I can't recall any similar issue with the "bold".

Probably not related but my dashboard is showing three copies of "Index of /", all exactly the same except one is headed "Latest Activity", it doesn't seem right, the different panels are ovelapping.

It's not just bold that doesn't work - anything other than plain text, web links for example, produce the same result.

    Hi

Anybody any ideas about this problem:

"I can create pages and posts that have only plain text in them.

I can't create pages or posts that have any kind of formatting (eg bold words/weblinks). As soon as I bold a word and try to save WordPress "crashes" into the "Index /" page with cgi folders etc."

There seem to be lots of people having the same problem on this forum, especially recently.

I tried another new installation, with exactly the same results.

I installed with Fantastico Deluxe, which seemed to go OK, and I can create posts but only with plain text, no formatting links etc.

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.6 on Ubuntu Feisty, but I doubt that should be a problem

If your front end index is apearing in the admin panel - that seems to be related to security settings on your server.
There were some posts about that and the fix was also posted - using .htaccess to turn off safe_mode.

    Edit. See this post: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/129967?replies=2#post-602151

youre not turning off safe_mode, your disabling mod_security, and that IS the source of your problem.

Follow my instructions in that other thread and you'll be fine.

    Thanks Everybody

I also followed up with my host (I'd thought they only provided WordPress and didn't support it - not true). They also said it was the security thing and have fixed it. Everything going fine. I'm really impressed with www.webhosting.uk.com (recommended somewhere in WordPress). They answer their phones and respond promptly to emails - how cool is that!
