• I’ve switched hosts. Installed a brand new copy of WP 2.2.1. Now trying to import my WP database backup from my old blog using the instructions here… http://codex.wordpress.org/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup . It says it’s imported successfully but nothing is happening. I don’t see any old posts. Nothing is changing in phpmyadmin. What am I missing here. one thing I have noticed is that the name of the database is different than what it was in the old blog. Does this matter? I thought it would import the backup and populate the WP tables with the old info. I’m begging for help.

Absolutely. You’ll need to update wp-config.php with the new data — otherwise, WP can’t access the database.

Thanks for responding Diane. I actually did update the config file. WP installed fine. phpmyadmin wasn’t importing my backup correctly. The backup was a regular sql file. I ended up importing a slightly older .gz file which seems to have done the trick. There’s still a few things I need to fix on the site, but at least all my posts/comments are back.

I wonder why it wouldn’t import the sql file. I’ve been backing up the same way using the plugin for a year now.

Okay. Good on you for figuring it out.

I moved a number of blogs to a new server a few months ago, and found instances in which the mysql database dump (the .sql file) could not be imported via phpmyadmin. I ended up importing via SSH in a couple of minutes.

Earlier, I’d posted how to do this; the commands may be slightly different on your server, but these are the basics: Cron and mySQL Database Backups
