wp-editor-area too narrow in Text Edit mode

Recently, the Text editor is only 40 cols wide. This is too narrow, and would require a hack to core file wp-includes/class-wp-editor.php line 145 to modify this restriction.
What can be done to fix this, besides going to full screen mode in text edit?
