Add search box to header to Responsive 1.8.8 theme

I have downloaded the responsive 1.8.8 theme but I am having a hard time figuring out how to add a search box to the header- it seems I can only add a logo? Also, is there a way to change the footer from the 3 widgets to a regular footer? Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
