• Hi Folks

I’m quite new to WP, but do know my way around Joomla, so forgive me if this is a really dumb question!

I’m currently doing some amends to a WP (3.5) site, and I need to replace all the existing graphics on the site with new ones (same sizes, same graphics, same format, same names – just optimized to reduce file size).

Unfortunately, it seems that everytime I upload a new graphic via the Media manager, WP ‘creates’ a path name itself, for example:

    http://www.site.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/graphic.png

When I upload the new graphic, obviously, this goes into a different path name, therefore it doesn’t actually replace the existing one (and therefore there is no change to the page).

Is there any method of replacing the existing graphics with the new ones (without having to edit every single page)?

I don’t have FTP access, which I assume would be the easiest method?

    Many thanks in advance.

  • Hi,

Why don’t you have FTP access ?

If you talk about the WordPress theme…
If your graphics that you want to change are part of the theme you choosen, you must not use the Wordperss media gallery to upload and overwrite these graphics !
This is only for post/page purposes.

You have to identify each graphic file in your theme folder according to the CSS file (style.css), then upload new version of these files using your FTP software to upload them and overwrite them into your server (theme folder).

Client has been ‘left in the lurch’ by the ex-web developer.

They don’t have FTP info or passwords (although, I guess I could try the hosting company).

With Joomla, I can hack files, etc., and FTP, just with the Admin login, I thought WP may be the same, but it doesn’t appear to be.

That’s right, the FTP details are acquired from the hosting provider.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I got the FTP details from the hosting company and simply uploaded the new files, overwriting the originals.

    Thanks again
