• I would like WordPress to have an easier way to create custom post types with settings rather than having to install plugins or edit code.

    Anyone else want this?

  • Yes… and no.

As much as I like the idea of it being made easier, the biggest problem that I see is that if it’s easier, more people will do it, and do it wrong/badly. People out there now have enough problems when it’s just pages and posts, and by adding in the ability for them to create thei rown custom types, you get the very real chance that it’s going to get very messy very quickly. Give a user an option, and they’ll break it! (just look at how many people come to the forums asking for help after they’ve changed settings without understanding what that setting does)

There are plugins now that allow you to create and manage your own custom post types and these work well, but that’s mainly because they aren’t installed by default. As a personal opinion I think it’s better off not being a part of the core code, and leaving it as a plugin or two that people can install if they really want to.
