missing editor buttons and unable to insert media

I have discovered with the update to 3.5 I am missing editor buttons on my page/posts. Above the main text editor box where you put in what you want on your page, there used to be buttons. The only one left is the insert media option, in a larger format than before. All of the buttons to the left are gone. I use easy rotator for my photography and without the button, my site is pretty much useless. I am using the deepfocus theme from elegant themes. It was not updated so I did that. Still no luck. I have deactivated and reactivated my plugins numerous times. I have emptied my cache in safari. I also have the problem that when I use the upload media button, it will not work. I have to go to the separate media button on the left side to toolbar. After doing that, when I try to actually insert the image, nothing happens. The insert image screen returns to my page editor without doing anything.
