SPAM control with WP-Ban, Akismet, Worst Offenders plugins
-
Ka-chow! I’m getting very good results with comment-SPAM control using the WP-Ban, Akismet, and Worst Offenders plugins. Akismet using the API code rocks (duh) and quarantines virtually all comment spam, BUT one or two incoming comments falsely tagged as spam have forced this tidy blogmaster always to carefully check the Akismet list (and untag the very rare false positives) before hitting Delete All. Tedious.
The Worst Offenders plugin also works great but has a sparse and rather gearhead configuration scheme — with display problems in Safari (Mac OSX). Worst Offenders simply clusters serial spammers’ comments by their duplicate IP code but doesn’t automatically reject those spams. This means you CAN quickly find and zap the worst offenders’ spam, but you can’t thereafter ban those offenders by IP#, so you still have to switch to the Akismet list afterward and zap the remaining spams, and the worst offenders will simply come back again later. Almost as tedious.
I added the effective (but rough-edged and risky) WP-Ban plugin so that I could automatically and permanently reject all known spammers by IP#, BEFORE they even land in my blog or get into the Akismet quarantine list. One nice goodie in the WP-Ban options is an easily-customized HTML rejection message for spammers — try “Bite THIS, ya germ!” or whatever.
The three plugins together are easy to use and working great….
