problem with fantastico upgrade (2 posts)

I am running WP 204 with 3K2 and want to upgrade to 2.2 with new 3K2 0952.

Problem is I am unable to upgrade using Fantastico at my web farm. I think the reason is that two upgrades before (1.5) was installed via hand job and then 204 was installed by hand when I discovered Fantastico upgrade produced frightening results.

I would like to get back on track and get to some basic plain vanialla of WP 2.2 that I can do simple Fantastico upgrades going forward. So I am looking for a way to do this. The web farm support guys suggest:

    > install a new installation of the software in a subdirectory and then point it to your database. If all goes well, then you could overwrite your old installation with the new one.<

    Would this work?

Or is there a more simpler approach like

    turn off plugins
    change theme back to default
blow on the dice and run fantastico script
    rebuild theme with 3k2 0952
    add new plugins 2.2 compliant

If anyone can help out here or possibly meetup at word camp to help fix I would appreciate.

Well if you insist on using Fantastico (not recommended), then I'd upgrade the existing site [1] to the same version as is getting installed by your host's Fantastico.

Then install your Fantastico copy of WordPress, then copy over your wp-config.php from the 'upgraded copy' into the Fantastico copy.

Also read Editing wp-config.php as the wp-config.php you end up with SHOULD NOT have the DB_CHARSET and DB_COLLATE lines (assuming you followed the advice above).
