Everything with installing, cache folder etc. worked, even the thumbnail pics are created into the cache folder, but the pictures do not appear. There's just the empty frame instead of the thumbnail. When clicking on the thumbnail (empty frame), the original sized picture appears.

Can you post a link to the website so I can see what's happening? The most likely problem is the cache file path in the options area needs to be adjusted. Please check the troublshooting guide at Awsom.org and look in the Pixgallery troubleshooting section.
